AYAWASO WEST MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY DONATES REFUSE CONTAINERS TO IMPROVE SANITATION

The Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly (AWMA) donated refuse containers to selected communities and a school within the municipality as part of efforts to promote environmental cleanliness. The presentation ceremony took place at the La Bawaleshie Presbyterian “2” Basic School on 14th May 2026.  A total of twelve (12) refuse containers were distributed to eleven (11) communities and one educational institution, the Accra STEM Academy.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), in his address, emphasized that the donation is aimed at improving sanitation, ensuring cleaner communities as well as forms part of the Assembly’s commitment to strengthening waste management systems and encouraging proper waste disposal practices across the municipality. He noted that indiscriminate waste disposal remains a major challenge and reiterated the Assembly’s resolve to provide the necessary logistics to address the situation. He further urged beneficiary communities and the school to take good care of the containers and make effective use of them to promote a healthy environment. He added that the Municipal Environmental Health Officer will be in charge of sending the containers to the respective beneficiary areas.

A representative from the Municipal Education Directorate, Madam Doris Owusu expressed appreciation to the Assembly for extending the support to the education sector. The representative noted that providing refuse containers in schools contributes significantly to instilling good sanitation habits among pupils and supports a conducive learning environment and further requested that this initiative should be extended to the other schools.  

The Principal of Accra STEM Academy also conveyed gratitude to the Assembly for the intervention, stating that the container will greatly assist the school in managing waste effectively. He assured that the facility would be properly maintained and utilized for its intended purpose.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiary communities, the Assembly Member for the Legon Electoral Area expressed sincere appreciation to the Assembly for the timely intervention. He indicated that the containers would go a long way in addressing waste disposal challenges within the communities and pledged that residents would cooperate to ensure their proper use and maintenance.

The Member of Parliament added that the event highlighted the Assembly’s continued dedication to improving public health, environmental sanitation, and overall quality of life within the Ayawaso West Municipality. He urged the recipients to handle the containers with proper care.

  The distribution of the refuse containers is expected to significantly enhance waste management practices and contribute to the Assembly’s broader goal of creating a clean, safe, and sustainable environment for all residents.
