AYAWASO WEST MUNICIPAL EDUCATION DIRECTORATE
v BRIEF HISTORY OF GHANA EDUCATION SERVICE (GES)
The Ghana Education Service (GES) was established in 1974 to oversee pre-tertiary education. The GES operates through a decentralized structure, with 260 districts and 40 municipal directorates, ensuring education delivery across the country. The GES is responsible for implementing national education policies, managing schools, and promoting quality education. The current Director –General is Professor Ernest Kofi Davis.
v BRIEF HISTORY AND OVERVIEW OF THE AYAWASO WEST MUNICIPAL EDUCATION DIRECTORATE
Ayawaso west Municipal Education Directorate was one of the nine directorates curved out of the Accra Metropolitan Education Directorate to serve the newly created Municipal Assemblies. The Municipal shares boarders on the North by Adentan Municipal, South by Accra Metropolis, East by La Nkwantanang- Madina Municipal. On the West by Ayawaso Central, Ayawaso East and Okaikwei North.
The office was officially opened in September 2019 with Ms. Margaret Kaba as the first Director from September 2019 to August 2024. Mrs. Judith Amoateng Ennin took over from September 2024 to date. The key mandate of the Education Directorate is to be in charge of the Management and Supervision of all Pre-tertiary (Basic, SHS, Vocational, and Technical) schools both private and public within the Municipality. The Ayawaso West Municipal Education Office is located at Roman Ridge near the Roman Ridge Basic M/A School and the James Camp Prisons. The office has its GPS address as GA-059-7925.

To provide accessible, learner- centered education that promotes academic excellence, creativity, social responsibility and empowers learners to reach their full potentials.
VISION
All-inclusive , equitable and quality education for children in the Ayawaso West Municipality.
Schools under the Education Directorate are categorized into two Circuits, namely Abelenkpe Circuit and Maamobi Circuit. Under these Circuits are fourteen (14) public schools which are;

The Directorate has one Senior High school which is the Accra STEM Academy
v SCOPE OF TEACHING AND LEARNING AT THE DIRECTORATE
The Ayawaso West Municipal Education Directorate’s scope includes:
· Pre-tertiary education: Managing kindergarten, primary, junior high, and senior high schools. The classes range from Basic I to Basic 3 which is the lower primary, Basic 4 to Basic 6 also the upper primary and Basic 7 to Basic 9 which is the Junior high school.
· Curriculum implementation: Ensuring adherence to national curriculum standards.
· Teacher support: Providing training and resources for teachers.
· Student assessment: Monitoring student progress and learning outcomes.
· Community engagement: Collaborating with parents and communities to promote education.
v FUNCTIONS OF THE MUNICIPAL EDUCATION DIRECTORATE
The functions of the Municipal Education Directorate include;
· The Municipal Directorate is the focal point for implementation of the policies and programmes of education at the pre-tertiary level to ensure the proper execution and realization of the mandate of the Ghana Education Service as stipulated in the Education Act, 2020 (Act 1043)
· The Municipal Directorate is responsible for monitoring and supervision of teaching and learning including Guidance and Counselling in all pre-tertiary institutions.
· The Municipal Directorate is responsible for advising the District Chief Executive/ District Assembly on all educational matters.
· Preparation and submission of quarterly and annual reports on all educational activities in the Municipal according to guidelines issued by the GES Council and the Ministry of Education to the Director General.
· Management and supervision of personnel and all schools (both public and private) schools within the Municipal in accordance with current practice and any directives which may be issued from time to time.
· Preparation of annual budgets of the Municipal in accordance with the current accounting framework and submission of same to the Director General through the Regional Director
· Coordinates the work of the Municipal Education Oversight Committees (MEOC)
· Any other duties that may be assigned by the Regional Director or by the Director General.
v THE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE OF THE EDUCATIONAL DIRECTORATE
The Municipal Education Director serves as the head of the Municipal Education Office, overseeing the overall administration of education services within the municipality. She is assisted by Deputy Directors who are also the front liners namely;
· Administration and Finance
· Planning and Monitoring, Data collection, Research and Records
· Human Resource Management and Development
· Supervision and Management of Teaching
who play critical roles in ensuring the effective delivery of education services.
