As part of efforts to strengthen grassroots governance and deepen community participation in local administration, the three Zonal Councils under the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly (AWMA), namely Abelenkpe, Westland and Shiashie has successfully reconstructed new members. This was done through elections organized by the Municipal Electoral Commission office over a three-day period 11th -13th February 2026 for Westland, Shiashie and Abelenkpe zones respectively.
The Zonal Council serve as the bridge between the Assembly and residents, oversee sanitation management, support revenue mobilization, monitor development projects as well as address community level concerns to promote effective governance.

Each Zonal council is composed of the Assembly members representing the electoral areas under each zone and two unit committee members from each electoral area under these zones. The council is chaired by an assembly member of any of the electoral areas in the zone. Votes are cast on these members by all Assembly members and unit committee members of electoral areas under each zone to confirm their appointments in the council.
At the conclusion of election, the following Hon. Ishmeal Dhajie Ashaley, Hon. Justice Apelike Kudalor and Hon. Moses Ofori were affirmed Chairpersons for the Shiashie, Westland and Abelenkpe Zonal Councils respectively.
A swearing ceremony was held for the new members after each election during which they were admonished by the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Dr. Michael Mensah to improve service delivery in their localities.
