The Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly (AWMA) has commenced a Sanitation Surveillance Exercise to address indiscriminate waste disposal at bus stops and other unauthorized locations within the municipality. On 25th June 2026, the Assembly’s Taskforce arrested two persons at about 3:00 a.m. at the Dzorwulu Bus Stop in front of Perez Chapel for dumping refuse at the  location.

The Municipal Environmental Health Officer (MEHO), Alhaji Shani Muntalla, hinted that the exercise forms part of the Assembly’s efforts to enforce sanitation bye-laws and promote environmental cleanliness. Per the Assembly’s bye-laws, offenders may either be processed before court or sanctioned through the imposition of spot fines, which range from GHS 1,500 and above.

In this instance, the adult offender was fined GHS 2,000, while the juvenile offender was fined GHS 1,000, taking into consideration her age.The offenders were further directed to collect the refuse dumped at the location and sweep the bus stop as part of corrective measures.

The Assembly reiterates its commitment to enforcing sanitation regulations and urges residents to dispose of waste only at approved sites to ensure a clean and healthy environment.
