The Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly on May 29th, 2023 commemorates the World Menstrual Hygiene Day. With the Department of Social Welfare and the Muncipal Director of Education leading the effort, sanitary pads were distributed to girls in the Abelenkpe Basic 1 and Roman Ridge Basic School.
The purpose of this initiative was to create awareness and provide education on menstrual hygiene, in line with the annual observance of Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28th. By prioritizing the well-being of vulnerable girls, the Department aimed to emphasize the transformative power of improved menstrual hygiene in unlocking economic and educational opportunities for women and girls within the municipality.
Through a partnership with the Ntiamoah Foundation, the Assembly facilitated the coordination of this year's Menstrual Hygiene Day celebration. The collaboration included the provision of sanitary pads to girls in need and imparting essential knowledge to ensure they can care for themselves and attend school without hindrance.
The distribution process commenced at Abelenkpe Basic 1, where the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development staff, along with the Municipal Education Director's team, were warmly welcomed by the organized pupils, teachers, and the head of the school.
Several key points on good menstrual hygiene were highlighted including the importance of hygiene, the various menstrual products available, proper disposal methods, handwashing, regular changing of menstrual products, genital hygiene, and understanding one's menstrual cycle were emphasized. By providing this knowledge, the aim was to minimize the potential negative effects and promote overall health and well-being during menstruation.
The same spirit of organization and enthusiasm was observed at Roman Ridge Basic School, where the second part of the activity took place. The headteacher, teachers, and the girl child coordinator from the Education Directorate were present to ensure the successful execution of the initiative.
A total of 62 girls from Abelenkpe Basic 1 received two sanitary pads each, while 102 girls from Roman Ridge School received one sanitary pad each. The girls expressed gratitude to the Assembly, the MCE, the Director of Education, the Department of Social Welfare and Community, and the Ntiamoah Foundation for their support and for imparting valuable knowledge about good menstrual hygiene.
The school heads and teachers present also extended their heartfelt appreciation to all stakeholders involved in the exercise. They expressed gratitude for the support and requested further assistance for vulnerable pupils in their schools.
