On Friday 1st December,2023 the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly led by Hon. Sandra Owusu Ahinkorah, the Municipal Chief Executive held their 5th National Farmers Day programme at the La Bawalashie Presby Park.
Present at the programme was the Presiding Member, Hon. Benjamin Oklah, the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Bernard K.P Sakyiama ,Traditional councils, various Heads of department, staffs and invited guests.
The programme commenced with a prayer from Chairman Alfred Ahunu and followed by a speech from the Agric Director Madam Matilda Donkor. She acknowledged the presence of the farmers and also praised them for their cooperation and hard work when it comes to farming. She also thanked them for always ensuring there is food in our households to feed. She said the department would continue to give famers education to increase food production and to create jobs especially for the youth.
The MCE, Hon. Sandra Owusu Ahinkorah also expressed her excitement to be present at the programme and encouraged the farmers never to relent from farming even though we do not have enough lands for vast farming. She further said the farmers within the municipality rear various forms of livestock and fisheries which consists of 3,650 tilapia, 2100 catfish, 750 poultry among others. She also mentioned under the planting for food and jobs, 243 crops farmers within the municipality were subsidized with seeds and fertilizers. This has helped increase the level of crop production in the municipality.
Mr. Alidu Ayuba was adjudged the overall best farmer. The awardees were presented with a tricycle, fertilizers, knapsack spraying machine to the best farmer, a motor cycle, basket, fertilizer, cutlass and a knapsack spraying machine to the best crop farmer, a chest freezer and wellington boots and fertilizer to the best livestock farmer, cutlass, knapsack spraying machine, pipe hose, wellington boots and poly tank to the best backyard farmer, television, fertilizer was given to the best agricultural extension for their good and hard work.
The chairman expresses his profound gratitude to all the people present for making the 5th National Farmers Day a success and also entreated the farmers to continue with their hard work.
