Environmental Health and Sanitation

CORE MANDATE

To provide strategic and administrative leadership for the management of policies and programmes relating to Environmental sanitation.

FUNCTIONS

  • To provide strategic advice for the formulation and review of policies and programmes on Environmental sanitation.
  • Develop technical standards and specification for Environmental sanitation service delivery.
  • Manage day-to-day administration and control all activities for the smooth functioning of the division.
  • Coordinate the application of engineering techniques and concepts in the solution of waste management and problems.
  • Liaise with agencies in addressing complex Environmental sanitation problems requiring intersectoral collaboration.
  • Lead the quality assurance process for Environmental sanitation.
  • Initiate and coordinate research and lead the dissemination of results in the Environmental sanitation field.
  • Vet building plans and specifications of various types of licensed establishments, for compliance with Environmental sanitation rules and regulations.
  • Ensure the development of the capabilities, skills and knowledge of staff.
  • Appraise direct reports; and
  • Undertake any other duties that may be assigned.

SERVICES PROVIDED

  • House to house inspection to detect nuisances and find means of abatement.
  • Inspect hospitality industries to ensure food, clients and staff safety.
  • School inspections to ensure adequate lighting and ventilation, the avoidance of overcrowding and safety of school children.
  • Market inspections
  • Educating and organizing medical screening for food vendors to ascertain their medical fitness.
  • Hospital inspections to ensure safe disposal of hazardous waste.
  • Inspection of sanitary facilities within the municipality.
  • Inspection and issuing of suitability Report and Certificate.
